Background of the Study

Pediatric trauma cases represent a significant portion of emergency medical care in hospitals, often requiring urgent intervention due to the unique physiological characteristics and vulnerabilities of children. In Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, pediatric trauma cases are common due to road traffic accidents, falls, burns, and other accidents, making the role of emergency nurses crucial in providing timely care. Emergency nursing care for pediatric trauma victims encompasses a range of interventions such as initial trauma assessment, stabilization, pain management, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.

The effectiveness of emergency nursing care in pediatric trauma cases is closely linked to the nurse's ability to recognize and respond to the specific needs of children in trauma situations. Pediatric trauma care requires not only technical skills but also the ability to communicate effectively with children and their families in stressful situations. While emergency nurses in Federal Medical Centre, Keffi are trained to provide critical care, there may be variations in the quality and timeliness of their responses to pediatric trauma, influenced by factors such as available resources, nurse training, and organizational support. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of emergency nursing care on pediatric trauma outcomes in Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, focusing on the timeliness, quality, and patient satisfaction with care provided.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of emergency nursing care in managing pediatric trauma cases, there is a need to evaluate the actual impact of this care on patient outcomes in Federal Medical Centre, Keffi. Factors such as resource limitations, training inadequacies, and workload may affect the ability of emergency nurses to deliver optimal care, potentially leading to less favorable outcomes. This study will investigate how emergency nursing care affects the outcomes of pediatric trauma patients, identify the barriers to effective care, and suggest improvements for enhancing care quality.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of emergency nursing care on the outcomes of pediatric trauma patients at Federal Medical Centre, Keffi.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by emergency nurses in providing care to pediatric trauma patients.
  3. To propose strategies for improving emergency nursing care in pediatric trauma cases.

Research Questions

  1. How does emergency nursing care influence the outcomes of pediatric trauma patients at Federal Medical Centre, Keffi?
  2. What challenges do emergency nurses face in providing care for pediatric trauma cases?
  3. How can emergency nursing care for pediatric trauma patients be improved?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nursing care at Federal Medical Centre, Keffi significantly improves the outcomes of pediatric trauma patients.
  2. Challenges such as insufficient training, resource constraints, and high workload negatively affect the effectiveness of emergency nursing care for pediatric trauma patients.
  3. Improving emergency nurses’ training and resource availability will lead to better outcomes for pediatric trauma patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the impact of emergency nursing care on pediatric trauma cases at Federal Medical Centre, Keffi. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining data from families, potential biases in self-reported assessments, and challenges in tracking long-term outcomes of trauma patients.
